Similar to the fan art that surrounded the Hodor phrase, I am Groot becam a popular meme from 2014 onwards.

Google Trends show that searches on Google for the phrase I am Groot peaked in August 2014.

In May 2017 the meme showed another spike in populariity and then again in May 2018 but these were almost half as strong as the August 2014 peak.
